Iduka Thrift Store Staffing
Staffing is exclusively through volunteers.
Volunteers and Community Service Volunteers
Volunteers work wholly without pay, compensation or benefits of any sort. We only ask that all volunteers be committed and to abide by the policies and procedures put forth in this manual, to know that they are required by law prohibiting discrimination or harassment of any sort, and to adhere to such laws. Volunteers and Community Service Volunteers are also required to follow policies concerning the Thrift Store Code of Conduct and will need to read and sign the Code of Conduct Creed.

The ideal candidate is ready for their next professional challenge; you are also “grace-under-pressure,” a team player familiar with wearing many hats on a high-performing team, able to relate to all of our varied personalities with relative ease. You understand that excellent customer service is vital to our success and model it in every interaction. You actively demonstrate a commitment to Iduka’s mission and values.
Volunteer Job and Task Descriptions
The volunteer jobs available at the Thrift Store cover a broad range of activities and talents. We need many hands to make the store operations efficient and profitable.
Listed below are some of the volunteer opportunities available in the Thrift Store.
Sorter: Help to sort through the donations including clothing, household items, boxed and bag goods and determine what will go out onto the sales floor, what will need further repair or cleaning or what will need to be further donated to another nonprofit charity, or what needs to be discarded.
Pricing: The Manager will designate certain individuals each day to price items and prepare items to be put on to the sales room floor.
These individuals hold a special talent through experience with thrift store marketing and are familiar with pricing, labels and trends which enable them to determine a fair market price that would be most profitable to the thrift Store. They also adhere to the IRS recommended resale list of tax exempt donor value ranges when pricing items.
Merchandising: Help maintain the physical appearance of merchandise on the selling floor by continuous arranging, decorating, fixing merchandise to be displayed in the store and giving optimum visual appeal to the customer. These volunteers must have experience well above the average individual who manages their home decorating environment. Individuals who have store or home design backgrounds would be ideal candidates.
Handyman/Handywoman: Help to repair items when possible. Have carpenter and building skills. Typical items which may need repair, may include bikes, lamps, furniture, household items and appliances and electronics. These volunteers make certain to check that washers, refrigerators, freezers, TV’s are in proper working condition. They may need to replace plugs or belts to vacuums, etc.
Sales: Helpers may “play store” help customers find things, promote the store, greet customers, sell!. Volunteers may also help run the cash register, help bag sold items.
Housekeeping/Cleaning: Although we would like to see all volunteers chip in and do their daily pick up, dusting and vacuuming of the store, helpers may have a special knack and expertise through career, of housekeeping skills. We always need you!
